East Midlands CIS Scheme

To facilitate the installation of new CIS equipment across 26 stations on the East Midlands Train franchise, Neary Rail were contracted by Babcock Rail to carry out all civils works.

Works included installing new buried duct and chambers in platforms and reinstating all surfacing (block paved, slab paved and tarmac). Neary also excavated for and poured new concrete CIS post bases before installing the CIS posts and making good surfacing. A number of induction loop posts were installed, along with new connections to existing lampposts.

The majority of works were carried out during the daytime with platforms remaining open to passengers throughout. Neary Rail planned and booked line blockages as required to ensure that no Red Zone Working took place on the whole project.
Logistics proved the biggest challenge due to the location of the 26 stations, which were spread over 3000 square miles. Detailed planning of the works was required to ensure that the correct labour, plant and materials arrived on site at the correct time.

Despite additional works being carried out, the works were completed safely and on time.

Prior to this project Neary Rail successfully completed similar works at 37 stations on the Ayrshire LLPA Project, 39 stations on the Glasgow LLPA Project, 22 stations on the East Lancashire CIS project and 10 other stations including Newcastle, Perth and Stirling.
