New Build Cable over Rail Bridge - Edinburgh

In 2009 Neary Rail were employed by Prysmian Cables to construct a new cable bridge over the live railway at Blackford Avenue, Edinburgh.

Due to the nature of work, both possessions and road closures were required. The complexity of the project meant that many logistical challenges had to be overcome. Neary therefore organized regular meetings at which all affected parties (Edinburgh Council, Police, Bus Companies, Network Rail and Local Residents) were informed of progress, planned works and potential disruption.

Ground investigation confirmed that the embankments were both stable and suitable for the construction of the required cable bridge foundations. The reinforced concrete bank seat foundations were poured in two stages, with the primary pour enabling the bridge to be positioned and the secondary pour encapsulating and securing the bridge pipes.
Excavations, formwork and reinforcing installations were completed during midweek dayshifts whilst the sheet piling, concrete pours and the bridge installation were completed during Saturday nightshift possessions.

The new bridge now carries 275kv power cables installed by Neary Civils as part of the Edinburgh Gas Compression Cable Renewals Scheme for Prysmian and Scottish Power.
