WCML 650v Power Upgrade

Working for Network Rail, Neary Rail installed over 38 km of new 650v power cables over a 16 mile section of the WCML near Preston and an 8 mile section on the Euxton Junction to Manchester line.

In addition to the cabling work Neary also installed 600m of new concrete troughs, 1900m of new GRP raised route and 650m of new cable tray and lids through Chorley Tunnel and Flying Arches. Where the existing route was covered by spoil, 6.8km of ballast clearance was undertaken and 2.8km of ballast retention boards were installed. 4250 trough lids were changed and 1.5km of de-vegetation works carried out to significantly improve and upgrade the 24 miles of existing S&T route.

3 new open cut UTX's and a new 40m 6 way directionally bored UTX (under 5 open lines on the WCML) were installed to improve cross track capacity.

Neary Rail booked all the possessions, isolations and plant required on the project, working closely with Network Rail planners and engineers in Preston.
