Gloucester, Commercial Rd to Castle Meads 132kV

Client | Prysmian (Ultimate Client : Western Power Distribution )

Division | Construction

This scheme, located in the centre of the city adjacent to the Gloucester Quays and the River Severn, involved the installation of 1 No. 132kV cable circuit (along with spare ducts for a future circuit) through approx 1.4 km of residential, business and retail roads and via a directional drill below the River Severn. The route is between the re-furbished Commercial Road Substation and Castle Meads Substation. During the works, due to historical interest, an archaeologist was employed under a "watching brief" while the trench was excavated - an ancient stone foundation (probably part of the old castle walls) was exposed.

To enable traffic flow to be maintained, along with the least amount of disruption to the general public, the cables were laid within ducts - this ensured that the trench could be backfilled and permanently reinstated as the duct laying progressed.

The works commenced in Sept 2011 and were successfully completed, on programme and within budget, in Feb 2012 to the satisfaction of Gloucester Highways and WPD.
