Manchester Piccadilly Station - Platform 13 & 14 Canopy Replacement

Neary Rail were awarded the Manchester Piccadilly Station Platform 13 & 14 Canopy Replacement Project and Appointed as Principal Contractor and Principal Designer.

The Project entailed that the existing canopy structure throughout Platform 13 and 14 was to undergo a full refurbishment, comprising replacement of existing canopy glazing panels and fascia boards throughout Platform 14. The existing superstructure and substructure elements was to be surface treated and repainted as part of the proposed refurbishment works.

Neary Rail carried out the Replacement of the existing Victorian glass and steel frame canopy and timber dagger boards with new Polycarbonate Panels with Service Hatches as required, along with fabricated steel brackets and droppers connected to the superstructure for the new GRP fascia to Platform 14. The existing superstructure and substructure elements was mechanically prepared to Sa2 with an M34 Paint system applied to the designated RAL colours.

Due to the tight access and laydown constraints at Manchester Piccadilly Station, the Logistics and Installation had to be carefully planned so that the day-to-day operations at the Station were not affected, with nigh time working under High Street Environment for the majority of the Platform level works. The Canopy works were carried out under weekend Possessions and Isolations with short durations of working times due the minimum availability on Platform 13 & 14, therefore the planning and staging of the removal and installation works had to be carefully co-ordinated to safely handback the Platforms at the end of each shift.

Due to the works being located at Roof level, the Safety of the team and the Station users was paramount and all staff were Trained in Working at Height and PASMA trained for safe use and working on Tower Scaffolds and MEWPs.

Additional works awarded to the Project involved the painting of the Northern Rail Offices and Stairwell Building on the Platform, Installation of 4no. Glazed Windbreak Screens and Information Screens on Platform 13 & 14 and within the Sky Lounge area.
