York Station

Neary Rail were awarded the York Station Project to replace the existing Roof Access Walkways and Appointed as Principal Contractor and Principal Designer, which involved gaining Listed Building Consents to this Historical Railway Station.
The Project consisted of the Replacement of 7no. Over Barrel Walkways from Timber to mix of Steel & GRP consisting of GRP ship ladders, GRP walkways seated upon Steel framing & Steel tube handrails.
A detailed 3D Laser scan of the existing barrel arches was undertaken to create a 3D Model to assist with the detailed Design and Fabrication Drawings for the Key Elements to ensure exact tolerances were met for installation works and connection points to existing valley walkways.
Due to the tight access and laydown constraints at York Station, the Logistics and Installation had to be carefully planned so that the day-to-day operations at the Station were not affected.
The Installation of the new walkways were carefully staged one Barrel at a time due to the requirement of maintaining access across the roof for other parties and Emergency Services if required.
Due to the works being located on the Roof, the Safety of the team and the Station users was paramount and all staff were Trained in Working at Height and Harness wearing, with the safety requirement of always being clipped onto parts of the existing infrastructure.
This involved the removal of old timber walkway in sections and replacement on a like-for-like basis, with very minimal storage of materials upon the roof. All materials sizes were kept to a minimum to facilitate the delivery up onto the roof via hoists and the manual handling to/from each Barrel location.
