Summit Tunnel Brickwork Repairs

During early 2015 Neary Rail undertook brickwork repairs to Summit Tunnel between Todmorden and Hebden Bridge for Network Rail.

Works to the 1.75 mile tunnel included pressure pointing, stitching and grouting, recasing and spot brick replacement to the tunnel refuges, walls, haunches, crown and one of the air shafts.

Neary Rail undertook and managed all the works including the Form 2-3 design, manufacture, installation and removal of the centring required to support the new brickwork between shifts.

Works were completed over 12 Sat night shifts and 2 weeks of midweek nights.

The works had to be coordinated carefully with Network Rail Works Delivery who undertook re-railing throughout the tunnel whilst Neary Rail undertook the brickwork repairs.

To ensure that the brickwork teams could communicate with each other and the site cabin half a mile outside the tunnel, Neary Rail set up a digital radio system.
