The Swansea North project required the construction and installation of 3 No.132 kV cable circuits and 1 No. 400 kV cable circuit to connect existing and new NG/WPD outdoor substations to a newly constructed GIS substation building.

The cable routes involved the installation of a variety of solutions including precast concrete troughing, open-cut fully-timbered trenching and ducted sections. The routes traversed privately-owned agricultural land aswell as passing through live substations and crossing newly landscaped sites. The works were carried out in carefully phased stages to co-ordinate with other works and meet numerous critical outages.

Approximately 7,000 linear metres of 132 kV cable and 900 linear metres of 400 kV cable were installed during the project which ran from October 2009 to June 2011.
