Boughton Road 132kV Cable Diversion

Client | Prysmian (Ultimate Client : Central Networks (now WPD)

Division | Construction

This scheme, located near the centre of Birmingham, involved the re-routing of an existing circuit into (and back out of) a refurbished substation. This was achieved by installation of 2 No. diverse 132kV cable routes through approx 1.4 km of parkland and residential roads. A horizontal directional drill was used to install ducts below the River Cole.

2 No. intermediate joint bays and 2 No. tie-in joint bays were constructed, with the cables terminated in the new substation GIS building.

The duct installation works were undertaken through the 2009 / 2010 winter period and, following a break from site to allow the substation refurbishment works to progress, cable installation was successfully completed in Sept 2011.
