Bramley - Didcot 400kV Fluid Filled Cable Recovery

Client | Electricity Alliance West

Division | Construction

This scheme required the removal of 2 No. redundant fluid-filled circuits, each approx 3.5 km in length. The cables were underground through a mixture of arable, grazing and wooded land but the majority ran through The Goring and Streatley Golf Club, all of which required a high degree of planning and liaison to maintain good working relationships with the various stakeholders.

The scope of works involved the excavation, removal, transportation (to a purpose made bunded area) and subsequent disposal of the 400kV cables, pilot & auxiliary cables, marker tiles, straight joints, stop joints, link pillars, gauge cabinets and buried oil tanks. On completion all works areas had to be reinstated to their original condition.

Due to the high potential risk of ground contamination (through oil leakage while removing, transporting and storing the fluid-filled equipment) great emphasis had to be placed on ensuring that all personnel were fully briefed and had the necessary resources to mitigate against any potential spillages.

The works commenced in October 2009 and were successfully completed 12 months later without any environmental incidents. The project received high praise from the golf club both for the quality of the work and the overall management of the project.
