Lanark Station Refurbishment

Neary Rail were awarded the works acting as PC to undertake restoration to Lanark Train Station, under the CP6 BAM framework. The works involved replacing the roof with a SIGA slating system that replicates a traditional roofing slate. Due to planning constraints, we were required to remove and relay the platform elevations existing large-format slates. When stripping the roof it became evident that the roof structure was suffering from decay to the rafter ends and mid rafter sections to the majority of rafters. Neary Rail engaged with Advanced Preservations who undertook a full survey and provided a solution. It was decided all external rafter ends were replaced using traditional methods. Whilst the timber outriggers were being replaced Neary engaged with Daniel Naughton from Naughton masonry who undertook a full dilapidation survey to the chimneys and main station building. It was identified during the survey that 3 of the 4 chimneys had significant lean and required immediate attention. The three chimneys were carefully dismantled and rebuilt using traditional stonemasonry techniques, chimney number 4 received some TLC and was restored to its original state. The building was repointed where required. John Fulton plumbers were contracted by our roofing contractor GRS who installed all lead work to the completed chimneys roof valleys and ridges to an exeptionaly high standard.
All timber facias and lining boards were replaced along with all rainwater goods. Neary installed a plastic guttering system giving a cast iron effect with 115mm deep flow gutters.
The main canopy on platform 1 was stripped back and fully inspected before it was coated with a Sing ply membrane using the preferred SIKA Trocal and mock lead baton roll. A new timber roof structure was installed to a small redundant building on platform 1 along with the SIKA Trocal system and mock lead baton rolls.
