The division installed 2 x 400kV cable circuits (2 x cables per phase) in a route approximately 6.5km long across high quality agricultural land.
The division carried out the installation of 2 x 275kV circuits in a mixture of pre-cast and cast-in-situ trough routes.
Access was extremely restricted due to the existing substation infrastructure and the cable system design required innovative and complex installations solutions.
The works required the replacement of an existing combined Cess/SF6 tank within the live high voltage compound at the Conaco Humber Refinery Power Plant.A heavy duty tankbrace system was utilised in order to give safe access for operatives to a depth of 5m below ground level.
Between January`08 and November `09 work began on a green-field site, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, near to the picturesque village of Streatley in West Berkshire.
The works were being undertaken by the Electricity Alliance West, a partnership between National Grid, Babcock, AMEC and Mott McDonald.
Works were undertaken to demolish an existing 132kV switchgear bay and single storey brick building and replace it with a new reinforced concrete alternative.
The works were hampered throughout by the presence of a very high water table and 24 hour pumping was required throughout the duration of the construction phase of the works.
In order to provide access for the construction of the Olympic village in the East End of London a section of existing power line was undergrounded via two new tunnels bored between West Ham 400kV substation and Hackney 275kV substation.
Neary Construction then provided the high voltage cable interface between the new tunnel access shafts and the termination points within the live HV compounds.
